Public Response On The Office Vs Space Force What Went Wrong

The only thing I disagree with is that netflix binging makes you an intellectual even if it was a joke.

I know I'm in the minority so keep the hate to a minimum BUT. . . Space Force is better than The Office.

I like this show I really don't understand why everyone keeps saying it's bad. People always forget the office wasn't "the office" in it's first few seasons it took some time to find it's identity and same is true with parks and recreation.

I'll offer two thoughts as to what went wrong. First - people are letting critics and advance reviews decide if they like something or not. Second - nothing. It got a second season. In a year when more critically beloved things like GLOW lost their existing renewal. It succeeded in a year where others failed left and right. Maybe people just need to quit pigeonholing it into being one thing or another and let it be what it is.

My problem was this seems to be expected to be on par with The Office seasons 3-6 or so when it was at its peak. Compared to season 1 of The Office or Parks and Rec this show (for me) was much funnier and had a much clearer direction than those shows did. Give it time to develop and it could be something special. Especially if they can focus more on the characters and less on political satire that falls short. They have actors and actresses with a ton of charm. Let them build chemistry. And bring in Zach Woods, because he makes everything funnier.

Honestly, Space Force just felt lazy and indulgent--it was an unfocused Steve Carell comedy. I have never watched the Office so I'm not comparing it to that. Carell is a very talented comedic actor, it just feels like the setting and relationships don't really work. John Malkovich's Adrian Mallory is the best part of the show, absolutely hands down. He's constantly irritated with Naird, they fight and make up, and he's extremely motivated. I would watch him and Naird interact for hours. The problem with the show is that they wanted a broader focus, but didn't explore character relationships at ALL--except for Naird and Mallory. The daughter basically sat in the Bluth banana stand for half the season, doing absolutely nothing except being interested in a couple guys. They planted the seeds for some development between her and dad, but it went NOWHERE. Lisa Kudrow had the same problem. She's hilarious but we never learned why she was in prison, but she's into girls now I guess. If you wanted a workplace comedy, you need a broader workplace cast--with unique personalities who appear regularly to confound the main character, and who might develop throughout the season. Here, the only workplace characters are Mallory, Kaifang and Ali, who still don't have much characterization. If you wanted a family relationship comedy, why were Naird's daughter and wife sidetracked for basically the entire show? And if you wanted a political comedy, why are we wasting so much time on the family and workplace?

I usually agree with wisecrack, but I feel like this is missing further analysis, especially because it *didn't* bomb. Your audience largely disagrees with you on that. I really enjoyed space force. It is genuinely amusing, and the main theme rings incredibly true. You claim that it tries and fails to be both office comedy and political satire. I feel like that's a really limited scope for this project. Military Comedies are their own special blend of both, they have to be. I suggest maybe looking into incredible "The Pentagon Wars", I think it's going to set the right tone for analysis on this one.

I loved space force. It had some minor problems, but it's normal season 1 hiccups.
GamerFromJump10 Months ago
The explanation is simple: its only purpose was for smug Hollywood types to go “hurr hurr having a Space Force is stupid/boots on the Moon”, and they forgot to seek laughter instead of clapter.
